Teamwork- Dempsey Style
Tech has been an important part of Don "Coach" and Joyce Dempsey's' lives since the 1950's. They first met at Tech in Joyce's sophomore year when Don returned as a veteran of the Korean War.
"When I first came back from the War, I was afraid I might have to go to another school to finish my degree. But, John Tucker took me under his wing. He was one of the many staff and faculty that over the years made us part of the Tech family; and we have always been grateful for that," said Don.
After graduation, Don coached the Mountain Home High School football team from a 3 year losing streak to 10 consecutive wins. Before long, the Dempseys returned to Tech, where Don served as a faculty member from 1959-97 and head football coach from 1967-75. Under his leadership, the Wonder Boys won the 1968, 1970, and 1971 AIC football titles. In 1971, the Wonder Boys advanced to the NAIA national championship game in its first ever trip to the NAIA playoffs.
Joyce began her teaching career in the English Department at Tech in 1962. She went on to complete her Master's in 1965 and Doctorate in 1987. "I taught every class in the English Department and loved getting to know the students. There were some years when the students were particularly inquisitive and challenging. It was wonderful sharing life experiences with our four children and the students," said Joyce.
Arkansas Tech misses Joyce and Don because they were such great supporters of the Tech family and loved Tech Travel. Joyce died November 23, 2010, because of health reasons. At the age of 83, Don died July 29, 2013, and he enjoyed visiting with Tech friends until his death. Both left their mark at Tech and are missed every day. With the renovations, new programs, and athletics, they would have been so proud.
